CUPA Outing: Fontainebleau

I visited two lovely chateaus with CUPA.
The first was Fontainebleau
From Wikipedia:
"The Palace of Fontainebleau, located 55 kilometres from the centre of Paris, is one of the largest French royal châteaux. The palace as it is today is the work of many French monarchs, building on an early 16th century structure of Francis I. The building is arranged around a series of courtyards.[...]The palace introduced to France the Italian Mannerist style in interior decoration and in gardens, and transformed them in the translation. The French Mannerist style of interior decoration of the 16th century is known as the "Fontainebleau style": it combined sculpture, metalwork, painting, stucco and woodwork, and outdoors introduced the patterned garden parterre. The Fontainebleau style combined allegorical paintings in moulded plasterwork where the framing was treated as if it were leather or paper, slashed and rolled into scrolls and combined with arabesques and grotesques. Fontainebleau ideals of female beauty are Mannerist: a small neat head on a long neck, exaggeratedly long torso and limbs, small high breasts—almost a return to Late Gothic beauties. The new works at Fontainebleau were recorded in refined and detailed engravings that circulated among connoisseurs and artists. Through the engravings by the "School of Fontainebleau" this new style was transmitted to other northern European centres, Antwerp especially, and Germany, and eventually London."

Parisian Adventures: Episode 6

When I went in, I just wanted to take tons of pictures. Well, that and eat everything in sight.
But after I had bought lots and lots of goodies, they said that photos weren't allowed because they needed to control their publications and their relationship with their PR people!
Anyway, you can see some photos here,
where I first heard of this pastry shop:

I love these domes! SO pretty
I love the art deco (?) work of the mosaics

a hint of the macarons and a street's reflection

some window fun

my stash!
pieroigis: mushroom. beef.
a russian breakfast creamy-croissant-pastry.
Did you click on the link earlier?
I had a green pastry and
some of those multi-colored macarons.
quite sweet and I felt like I was tasting the food coloring.
And after a hectic bike ride, the green almond, pistachio raspberry
delight no longer looked as gorgeous, but it still tasted damn delicious.
next up: giverny! monet's gardens! normandy!

Parisian Adventures: Episode 5

Fouquet Chocolates!

Some more close ups of the chocolate:

I have incredible restraint; I didn't eat them all in one go.

super delicious, creamy interior that m-e-l-t-e-d on your tongue

I thought that the chocolate shop was nice. The women working there were a little aloof at first, but I think that they must have so many people tourists in there all the time that they want to conserve their energy. Anyway, when I started to get serious, they warmed up right away. Yay capitalism!
I also got to try a truffle, on the house, at the cash register. I had seen this before at Pierre Herme. Often times, the silver platter will go away when it is busy or when someone might just want free chocolate. But for the lucky few who buy, there is free chocolate involved!! A little like going broke saving money, but still delicious.

Classes: Paris IV, La Sorbonne. Among other things...

The street I sometimes bike down to get to my appartement

these condom dispensers are surprisingly common on the streets
this one was right next to a pharmacy

another pic from paris last night

a pic from inside the sorbonne; my classroom is on the right (but isn't in the pic)
I had the hardest time finding it. Why the hell would there be a classroom that can
only be reached through a courtyard??
the theater where I saw "the artist" for my french cinema class.
the seats go up much farther; this was the best cinema that I have ever been to.
I felt as if I had gone back in time, with the black and white silent movie and these seats

another angle

the window of fouquet, a chocolate shop
yum-yum!

I just love the motion in this picture!

I see this car every once in a while;
I know it it the same car because every other car here is black. or silver.

So I sat down and enjoyed my croissant in style.
