Friday Adventure: Train Station

A few Thursday nights ago, I was wondering what I was going to do the next day. As I have more time because I don't have any classes on fridays, I try to do something fun and a little more day-trip-y than just kicking it around Paris (I'm really suffering here). Then it hit me. Hadn't I been wanting to go to Giverny and visit Monet's house and gardens? Why yes, yes yes I like that idea, I thought to myself. Now to plan it. Of course, I was doing this slightly last minute; how can you get things done without the adrenaline that flows through you when you're working under pressure?
The moon was still out at 9 in the morning
no one else noticed it, and I got quite a few funny looks
by standing on a platform-like thing to take the pics,
but it was worth it

I decided that I would take the train that leaves at 8:30 am. And at 9 euros, it was a steal. I still can't get over how great it is to hop on transportation here. Of course, I overestimated, the metro's ability to zip under Paris, and arrived with ten minuted before the train was to leave (full disclosure: I also overslept. Side note: I need more sleep here than at WU, and certainly more than I needed at SMA. I don't know if I am out of practice, but I think that it may be because I use more energy here just by having to figure out how to get home, speaking another language...). Okay, back on track. Where was I? Oh yeshh: I still had yet to purchase my ticket.
 Smooth move Alex,
you are definitely not getting on that 8:30 train.

since I was so early, I walked around Paris.

basically no one out,  how rare

But I had a pretty great time exploring the early morning light in the city of lights. And as always, things worked out the way that they were supposed to; I found one of the bakeries that I had been meaning to go to!

parisian buildings from the inside of the train station

love from paris,
(and still loving Paris)

Friday Adventure: Normandy

Did I mention that I took a bike from vernon to giverny?
It was about 8 miles, roundtrip
such a perfect day!

As I was returning to vernon, I decided to go up a little side street.
It took me out onto this beautiful vista.
from al of the hullabaloo that was monet's estate,
it was magical to find myself in another place entirely.

the seine! and my bike
that was definitely an experience...
I am so used to the velibs, that
this one, with a sensitive brake and
pointy seat, took some getting used to

the seine again

biked down this hill! Can't really see it, but you can definitely
tell that it is steep

Fontainebleau Part IV

This post is going to be about the grounds of the chateau.
I hope that these posts aren't too wordy for you!
I have been trying to post something everyday (I can schedule them, so it's not too hard),
but I have so much to share and as much as I love you, I would rather be out enjoying Paris.
But if you would like me to elaborate, please post a comment!
It is easy:
Just pick the URL option and instead of writing a URL,
write your name. Easy-Peasy!

Okay, on to the good stuff:

I think that I took this photo from a window.
It was so fun to try to sneak away from the guards, pull back the curtains,
 and take these shots.
Not super sneaky, but fun nonetheless.

another window shot

from outside, under the grand
staircase that I posted in another entry

time to go up the stairs!

view from the stairs

on the stairs, looking up

the pond through a slit in the
 balcony/bannister/railing
(I forget all of my words when I am in France!)

two swans and a duck on a pond!

the swan and one of the many carp that inhabit the lake

and of course, a pigeon

more carp

more grounds

as always, more to come!

Alex

Fontainebleau Part III

les animals!

the elephant is a symbol of the king.
notice how only the elephant and the man on the left
are turned to the left?

a fresco in the same room,
but done in a completely different style
(because it was done in a different century)

this little guy was king philip (?)
anyway, you always know it is him
because of his smile
:)

I like how you can see the outdoors through the windows

more artsy chandelier pics

I would love a clock like this

in the chapel
lifesize on the walls right near the ceiling

giftshop!

love,
alex.

ps I hope I am not posting too much for you :)

CUPA Outing: Lunch

pretty roses on each table

terrine de campagne

herb-grilled lamb

the tarte-tatin of a friend

I definitely made the better choice

yum! caramel creme-brulee

topped off with an espresso!
VERDICT:
delicious!
And of course it was. It was a two-hour lunch with good: friends, food, conversation, wine.
It definitely made the next chateau so much better, seeing as how I don't have much patience for that type of thing.

Fontainebleau: Part II

super ornate!
These are some of the rooms inside
loving the footstool

tapestries like these would take a year to make

exposed beams covered with detail-work

the balcony for the musicians

frescoes!

I love the length in this library

can you spot the bed in this room?

it is quite camouflaged
I'll give you a hint...
it is on the right.
right?

more ornate-ness
